Lockdown plans are required to be approved by the Fire Prevention Bureau PRIOR to implementation. You should also note that any auxiliary locking devices must be approved prior to purchase. There are many devices being sold that do not meet the fire code requirement that the device be capable of being unlocked from outside the room with a key or other approved means.
These resources will assist you with your plans. The first is our Lockdown and Evacuation Policy Memo 3-19-2018. This memo gives you the code requirements related to what is required for creating a lockdown policy as well as guidance on the required evacuation drills.
The second is a template in Word format that you can use as your guide in developing your site specific lockdown plan.
If you have any questions about school lockdown plans, contact the Fire Marshal or another inspector in the Fire Prevention Bureau.
