Pre-Hospital Blood Transfusion
Mehlville Fire Protection District (MFPD) is proud to introduce Pre-Hospital Blood Transfusion, designed to elevate emergency medical care for the community. This innovative program equips Critical Care Paramedics (CCPs) and Critical Care Nurses (CCNs) with the ability to administer life-saving blood transfusions on-site during critical emergencies. By utilizing Low Titer O positive red blood cells and Type A plasma, MFPD can now replace blood lost during hemorrhaging, offering treatment closer to a whole blood transfusion and significantly improving patient outcomes.
In collaboration with ImpactLife, MFPD also hosts community blood drives to sustain this vital program. Through these efforts, District employees and local residents contribute directly to saving lives, with donations potentially benefiting friends and neighbors in need. The program’s first blood drive yielded nearly 20 units of blood, showcasing the community’s commitment to supporting this initiative. By adopting this low-risk, high-reward approach, MFPD ensures a sustainable and impactful use of regional blood supplies while delivering advanced care to its patients.
This initiative underscores MFPD’s commitment to innovation and excellence in emergency medical services. By bringing hospital-grade treatment to the field, Pre-Hospital Blood Transfusion sets a new standard for pre-hospital care, ensuring that the residents of St. Louis receive the highest level of emergency support when it matters most.
